As it relates to cultural competence, H&M failed by using a 5-year-old black male to create an ad for a hoodie sweatshirt with the slogan “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle.” Although the firm had good intentions and embraced cultural diversity, the ad sent a conflicting message internationally to members of the African American community. In particular, there were protests in some countries, such as South Africa, since people perceived as if H&M stereotyped individuals of African descent. Despite the company apologizing, its finances were adversely affected due to reduced sales caused by protests and boycotts worldwide.
