Understanding the relationship between a novel’s theme and its underlying meaning is essential for any reader. It allows him to appreciate better the author’s aims and hopes in writing the piece. In this article, the author would like to focus on the narrative of Animal Farm written by George Orwell. Specifically, the novel theme that the author will highlight is the issue of realization and reaching a decision. Being completely aware of something or concluding after learning or gaining knowledge is called realization. In line with George Orwell's narrative of Animal Farm, this paper will be about the words "realization" and "conclusion," and the author will try to explain and tie them to the present situation in the tale described. The narrative Animal Farm is based on the idea that animals should be free and equal to humans in specific ways. In human history, the realization has been a terrific means to eventually break free from people's or the government's previous habits. When the government imposes inhumane or oppressive restrictions, the people of the country will sometimes launch a protest because they have discovered that their government is not being fair and is restraining their rights as a citizen of the country. Thus, the author believes that the concept of realization in Orwell’s Animal Farm happened in three phases: realization of oppression, realization to dream about liberation, and realization of their need to act.
Realizations
One of the main themes that relate to the idea of realization of ‘the dream to be free’ is Old Major’s dream about the animal farm. Orwell said that “old Major relates a dream that he had the previous night, of a world in which animals live without the tyranny of men: they are free, happy, well-fed, and treated with dignity.” It must be noted that earlier in the story, the animals were already complacent about their place on the farm and did not have any other dream of being free from its confines and cages. Accordingly, this quote illustrates the idea of realizing their captivity and dreaming of becoming genuinely free one day. In reality, we may consider the government to be men, a government that does not oppress its citizens. A government should provide and recognize all citizens’ rights in their nation. When one considers that a government must be equally fair to every individual it controls, one realizes that some people are left behind not all rights are recognized.
Another realization in the story was the animal’s realization of their captivity and fatal destiny. In the novel, Orwell said that “the plain truth, he says, is that the lives of his fellow animals are “miserable, laborious, and short” (Orwell, pg. 2). Similar to realizing their dream to be liberated, this realization is different from their previous ‘satisfaction’ regarding their own lives.
