Trying to Find China: Compare and Contrast Characters
Characters: Benjamin and Ronnie
The two characters that will be compared in this essay are Benjamin and Ronnie. The two people are Asians, but they have been brought up in different backgrounds. They also share a different perspective of what an Asian should look like. Benjamin believes he is a Chinese-American because he was adopted into a U.S. family. On the other hand. Ronnie is a violinist who identifies himself by his profession rather than his genetic Asian heritage (Hwang 3). Several differences can be found in how the two characters behave and how they believe they are a part of the U.S.
Comparison between Benjamin and Ronnie
One of the main differences between Benjamin and Ronnie is the stereotype that one person has and the other one lacks. Although he is Asian, Benjamins believes that Ronnie can play the violin and other instruments because of his race (2). Benjamin has been adopted by Asian Americans and has not had the same opportunities and upbringing as Ronnie. He has been using the news media and other channels to decide the way that he will think. As a result, he has forgotten that judging people based on their birthplace (4). The American lifestyle is very different from the way that the people in Asia have been brought up. Benjamin, unlike Ronnie, has dramatically been affected by the U.S. culture and uses stereotypes to judge others. Ronnie is against stereotypes and is upset by the assertions that Benjamin makes.
There is also a difference between Ronnie and Benjamin in the way that they think about ethnicity. Although the two people have been brought up in the U.S., they disagree on defining ethnicity. There is a significant clash in New York corner when Benjamin, a Caucasian Asian American, and Ronnie, a fully assimilated street musician of Asian ancestry, debate ethnic identity. (4).
