In the essay, Maloney highlights how some Universities are imposing restricting policies which insult the right of free speech of the students. Free discussion is threatened especially when it is about politics. The physical space has been restricted where one can openly discuss and have debates about political and other topics. There is evident suppression of human expression. In one instance, students of the University of Delaware were rolling a free speech ball inside the campus and the University police apprehended them. In my own experience in the university, I saw that
The strategy of the University usually took a none progressive route. In the essay, point number 7 which states that:
“It’s because of what our universities have taught a generation of Americans: If you don’t agree with someone, are uncomfortable with an idea, or don’t find a joke funny, then their speech must be suppressed—especially if they don’t politically agree with you. “(Maloney)
In reality, it is with my interaction with political ideas that enhance my understanding of the world. During my time in college, I often joined student assemblies that had demonstrations and exchange of ideas. The campus setting made space for students to interact, and the passion of the students are evident in their presentation of their own piece of understanding.
