Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady of Fire is a love story between two women. It is set-in eighteenth-century France, which serves to emphasize the taboo of lesbianism. However, Sciamma does not dwell on the taboo. Instead, she delves right into the love story. It is clear from the beginning that Marianne and Héloise are fascinated by each other. They are both attractive and intellectually smart. But they want each other, and this is the idea that Sciamma tries to put across.
