Classification of the Types of Characters
Introduction
A character is someone who involves himself in the art of acting out novel scenes, plays or in the films (Aston and Savona 1). In literature, the characters help the readers to understand the stories through guiding them. Characterization involves the art of creating a character as practiced by the actors or the writers of the books (Harrison 1). A lot of writers employ a lot of character when narrating their stories out. The character is usually based on the personality that the writer or the actor possesses; it can also be based on the role. In literary fiction, characterization has significance and the author of the story needs to build up their own sense of responsibility.
Types of Characters
In any particular story or narrative, we can always single out that one character that is conventional. These are known as stock characters, and they are often stereotypical because they are instantly identifiable by the audience or readers due to the repetitive nature of what they do or say in the particular roles they have been assigned, and they are normally easily predictable one-dimensional characters who are largely considered being flat in nature. They can nonetheless be engrossed in deep conviction from time to time and in more isolated cases, be all-rounded characters. Hamlet is an example of a stock character4u (Puja, paras. 1-26).
Many stories and narratives have a central character in the story. This character is known as the protagonist and almost every major storyline touches on the character or the character’s main role in the narrative. The protagonist, as the name suggest, is that character who is presented with the main conflict in the story and must find a means of resolving it. This character is not always admirable though, like the anti-hero. He or she usually has the attention, or even better, the compassion, of the reader or audience nonetheless.
For the purposes of the story balance, where there is a protagonist there must be an antagonist who plays the role of an obstacle to every quest the protagonist is trying to pursue and every goal the protagonist is trying to achieve. The antagonist in other words is that character that makes the protagonist’s role relevant. The antagonist is the character whom the protagonist must overcome.
