Stress in college
Mental health among college students has plummeted in the recent past, and there is a need for students to understand the trend since they are the custodians of the future. There are many factors that stress students in college and though they may be overlooked by other generations as ‘normal college life,’ it takes a toll on the students. The world has changed, and it has flattened, and college life for students has changed to mirror the society. Seemingly, college students might be accused of being lazy and not ambitious because the world has more opportunities than ever before. Most students are constantly being pushed to do better in a rather challenging world than ever before. The pressure brought by this ‘push’ has taken a toll on these young and inexperienced individuals who already feel like they have failed.
Consider the need to perform exceptionally in schools to land a good job. The world is less forgiving to those who have failed in school and therefore most students who do not perform exceptionally already give up on leading successful and happy lives. Most firms and employers filter job applicants by their academic performance and therefore any student who gets poor results in the first year already feels he/she will never get the job of their dreams. Though these thoughts are not explicitly manifested in the daily lives of these college students, it affects their perception about their future which casts a shadow on their dreams. They feel they are judged unfairly by the society and the system not based on their intelligence or creativity, but by their memory on recalling the things taught in class. The flawed education system has contributed significantly to adversely affect the mental health of college students because from their perspective and with their school performances, they feel they have already failed in life. The feeling is worse, especially for students taking courses which are not ‘marketable’ in the modern world.
Technology has also contributed to increasing the stress levels among college students. We live in the age of social media and the internet. First, the social media has many advantages,and it was designed as a tool where people can communicate and catch up with family members and friend...
