George Eliot presents a conception of leisure that has lost its place in the society of her own time. She laments that people have forgotten what relaxation meant and have instead immersed themselves in an unremitting cult of activity and workaholism. She criticizes that while steam-engines replaced the spinning wheels, the pack-horses, and the slow wagons of yester-years, it did not free time for people to rest, it only created “a vacuum for eager thoughts to rush in.” This modern obsession with productivity has birthed the notion that time for rest should be spent in “excursion trains, art-museums, periodic literature, exciting novels, scientific theorizing, and cursory peeps through microscopes”. Leisure has lost its meaning and is no longer a period of self-indulgent relaxation but another opportunity to engage in more activity.
One of the most prominent stylistic device in George Eliot’s presentation of leisure is personification. Eliot transforms the abstract idea of the leisure of former times into a personage whom she typifies as a pudgy country gentleman who finds pleasure in the mundane including: “sauntering by the fruit-tree wall”, “scenting the apricots when they were warmed by the morning sunshine”, “sheltering himself under the orchard boughs at noon”, “drinking beer or port-wine”, and even joining the Sunday service if he can sleep through it. Eliot describes the man as unhurried, unruffled, complacent, genial, and untroubled by anything beyond the present. Eliot’s personage is never anxious...
