Modernism is an idea born out of human understanding. It represents the shift from outdated to new ways. Modernism has driven the rise and fall of empires, and it continues to be the reason behind unnecessary wars, inequality, and competition. However, as Gwendolyn Wright notes, it has also affected architecture and how structures are viewed. Wright highlights some of the problems the world and the field of architecture face in defining modernism. Modernism is a crucial concept in the world. Being modern has been used to classify nations and their peoples. The same applies to architecture. Like art, architecture is classified in periods that show ascription to certain styles. However, Wright finds that the world and the field of architecture, in particular, needs to change from the obsessive idea of modernism.
Wright's argument poses a great challenge to the world and the field of architecture. The gradual industrialization, innovation, and digitalization of the world are why modernism has become a critical aspect of human life. Change from primitive to simpler and effective ways defines modernism. The change in architectural designs, styles, and concepts has also changed due to industrialization, innovation, and digital technology. Therefore, a change of the mindset associated with modernism is less likely to occur given humanity's obsession with creation.
