The Black Lives Matter Movement
The Black Lives Matter Movement emerged due to the oppression and suffering experienced by black people across the United States. Alicia Garza first presented the concept in 2013 when George Zimmerman was acquitted of murder after killing Trayvon Martin. In her statement, Alicia stated that "our lives matter" to reveal the inequalities experienced by black people as individuals whose value of life was suppressed. From these statements, the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter emerged and became a movement that many people worldwide embraced. Although the movement emerged through a simple hashtag, a generation of Americans has associated it with transformative agenda of fighting for the rights of black people. The Black Lives Matter Movement has played a central role in advocating against racism and inequalities across the world.
There are many instances that the Black Lives Matter Movement is used to advocate equality in America, particularly against blacks. Notably, the movement has evolved significantly from simply being a hashtag to an organization with multiple chapters, transforming the framework under which people address the issues of racism, socioeconomic inequalities, police brutality, and more. Therefore, the current definition has been significant in highlighting the plight of black people across the world. Although the movement was initially developed in the context of America, many blacks in different parts of the world embraced it. They used it as a slogan to fight against racism and injustices committed against black people. Moreover, it assists in advancing the idea that all people were created equal and promotes race conversation.
When the movement first emerged, there were many identities or formations associated with it. The primary mission was to "eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted against Black communities" (Adams). However, the organization mutated into a complete foundation known as the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation. As black people are affected by diverse issues, the organization has been central in advancing the conversation to eliminate the negative aspects and ensure that black people have an equal space to pursue their social, economic, and political rights.
Most of the chapters associated with the movement are contextualized on the differing needs of the immediate black population. Although the movement was based on violence, people have used it as a slogan to highlight the cultural challenges that disadvantage black people.
