Do you think black Friday has become too commercialized and has gone out of control?
Black Friday, the unofficial name for the day after Thanksgiving Day in the US, is considered the commencement of the country’s Christmas shopping period. This trend has been there over the last six decades with many major retailers scheduling promotional sales sessions and opening as early as midnight to encourage shopping through cut rate prices and giveaways. It has become controversial due to the hysteria that grips shoppers, in some cases leading to long queues, stock shortages, stampedes, violence among customers and even death.
Since 2011 major retailers have gradually opened earlier with some serving customers as early as 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and denying their employees a chance to rest during the national holiday. This essay is of the view that Black Friday has become too commercialized for normal consumer and supplier behavior. In the retail sales world, Thanksgiving is no longer an occasion to take a break and appreciate the country’s achievements but the eve of shopping binges. At this rate Black Friday will soon overshadow Thanksgiving and Hanukkah.
Proponents of Black Friday contend that the shopping day is a result of free market forces but they forget that things were not like this until aggressive marketing campaigns from large retailers started...
