"Read" #2:
When to do this "read”: Shortly after "read” #1 and before your next class meeting.
How long it will take: 2-4 hours
What you need to do:
Read more carefully, this time with pen or pencil and paper. Mark passages in the text that confuse you or make you curious. Mark passages that you don't understand as well as those you understand well.
Look up at least 10 words that are unfamiliar to you, especially those that are repeated frequently—they are probably important! Write their definitions in your notebook.
You may not end up reading the whole essay word by wordd but do try to read the whole thing. Read about 4-6 pages more carefully than the rest. Usually, the first couple of pages, the last 2-3 pages, and a page or two in the middle are good to read more slowly and think about. Come to class with those pages marked up and with questions ready to ask in class.
You may need or wish to break up this time period into smaller parts, but you should try very hard not to use blocks of time that are too short (10 minutes at a time, repeated several times, makes it too choppy—you won't remember what you read from time to time.) Try for about an hour.
(If you need, explanations for read 1 and read 2 can be found on the How-To-Read sheet in module 3)
3. Reflection:
Answer the following Reflection Questions:
1. What are the two main reasons Beck gives for his claims that astrology is a perfect fit for Millennial and Gen X culture?
2. In what ways have Millennial and Gen Xers adapted and change the application of Astrological readings? How are modern astrological readings viewed?
3. What does Beck mean by "unreality”? How and why does Beck connect modern Astrology to the Enlightenment? What does this connection imply about Beck’s opinion of the current state of the world?
4. What would be Beck’s answer to the question: "Should I believe in Astrology?” support your answer with a quotation.« Previous

2. Reading:
This part is comprised of 2 annotated read-throughs, with each set of notes focused on a different level of comprehension and analysis. Both read-throughs are necessary.

Skim the reading. This means reading through the essay very quickly, maybe without a pen or pencil. Pay attention to any section titles and italicized words in the text. You’re reading to get a general idea of what the essay is about

Beck Reading; Journaling and Reflection: Astrology
Journaling
Astrology is a commonplace practice that transcends different cultural units and societies. Astrology is about the relationship that exists between celestial bodies and what is happening on the earth and individual lives. In this paper, I will express my opinions on my observation of astrology’s value, its impact on personality, and whether it can regain its glory and cap it with Beck’s arguments as reflection. I do not see any significant value on astrology from a personal perspective, but this issue remains debatable. Whether astrology is there or not, I would still lead my life on the typical pathway. However, I also see astrology is a concept that can be a source of fun and is well-positioned to bridge gaps that relate to uncertainties in our lives and the future.
I do not believe in personality astrology. What I know is that astrology is not a scientific concept that can be subjected to a validity test. I think astrologers have devised credible algorithms and ways of predicting individuals’ life by forming relatable connections between the celestial bodies and the people. It can be argued that there is a certain degree of ‘universality’ amongst people as espoused in personality, life cycles, and relationship patterns. The astrologer's algorithm is tailored to cover personality, individual traits, and challenges that may befall individuals at a particular time. We can note that these concepts have an intricate way of influencing the individual mind and psychology. Since astrology used a fodder of generalization and manipulative psychology, I feel that a personality through the lens of astrology is not real but ...
