New York City (NYC) is blessed with many beautiful locations and sceneries, but none has captivated me so much like the industrial district of Soho which is short for South of Houston. Unlike the other cosmopolitan areas in NYC, the lifestyle of the people in Soho is a bit relaxed and which then makes it a perfect place to escape from the hustles and bustles of the big city and unwind especially on weekends. I was utterly impressed with the friendly and welcoming attributes of the locals during my inaugural visit to the neighborhood. All the people that I stopped to ask for direction were of great assistance, and some even took their time to take me to the exact locations I wanted to see. Before the visit, I had done some online reading on some of the unique places and activities to do while in Soho and had managed to circle and jot down those facts on my guide map and notebook respectively. I was particularly interested in seeing the architectural developments and art galleries that formed a considerable part of the neighborhood's history and which are also major tourist attraction sites such as the Staley-Wise Gallery and Clifton Benevento.
During my visit, the weather was mostly sunny which necessitated people to wear casually. Ladies wore colorful sundresses while the men put on shorts with sleeveless t-shirts. I saw families sharing happy times together in restaurants and shopping complexes. I also encountered many tourists and who like me were also fascinated by the architectural design of most of the buildings in the neighborhood. These tourists had come from all corners of the world, and they walked freely. They carried huge travel bags on their backs and also had maps to guide them around the town. However, occasionally I would witness some of the tourists engaging the locals for assistance and despite the differences in ethnicity and language; they managed to communicate in English. Most of the locals in Soho are artists from different regions who settled in the area because of the good atmospheric environment for art. As such, there are very many art galleries in the neighborhood that are surrounded by cast-iron buildings. Some of these art galleries charge to view and take photos of the artworks while others are free. I had carried my camera so I was able to take pictures that I would show my family and friends when I returned to my native country for the holidays.
