ANALYTICAL SUMMARY: THE MAN AT THE RIVER
Introduction
The article, providing psychological services for children of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs): A Challenge for School Psychologists in the Philippines is authored by Tarroja and Fernando. It is a scientific research study based in the Philippines. Basing on other literature and findings of the research conducted the text talks about the implications of parents working overseas to the children and the family. It then provides insights on what can be done to help these children psychologically. The comparison text, the man at the river, was written by David Eggers.
It a story of two friends who come from different cultural backgrounds; one is a Sudanese and the other an American in the Sudanese setting. The two friends benefit from each other mutually. They decide to take a ride to a town when they came across a river, and the American refuses to cross because he is afraid of contracting an infection on his wound. The other comparison text is a speech on TED My Daughter Malala by Ziauddin Yousafzai. The speech was inspired by the fact that speaker’s daughter, Malala was shot dead in Pakistan because of going to school. The speech condemns the issues of gender inequality. The paper discusses the comparison of academic writing, personal writing, and the speech.

The study is thus relevant to address these issues and help the children grow and develop positively.
The problem of the scientific study is presented as a subtitle ‘Impact of International migration on Filipino families and children.' Then there are further subtitles under the same. The themes in the scientific text are presented as the title as well as in the text. From the title, the theme psychological impact of the absence of parental upbringing is exhibited. Poverty and inadequacy of psychological interventions in the Philippines are other themes.
The subject of the study in the Egger’s text is the foreigner who has to live with and adhere to the cultures of the people while in the foreign land. It is not mentioned directly in the text. The subject of the speech text is a woman, represented by Malala who lives in a nation where they undergo gender discrimination, and they have to adhere to it making it hard for them to obtain an education.
