Contemporary Japan Art
The manifestation of Japanese contemporary art was linked to American influence because of the effects of World War II (Higa, 6). The aftermath of the War created Japanese stereotypes about the country's national and cultural identity (6). As a result, contemporary artists challenge these racial stereotypes by exploring and experimenting with the different dimensions of Japanese identity and reestablish how the world views their national culture. After the Japanese post-war art, Japanese artist gathered an international reputation that created the foundation of contemporary art to hold the widespread interest of Western countries, such as the United States (Beckh, 10). In the United States, contemporary Japanese art is represented by “Nipponism” from the prominence of Japanese artists like Kenzo Okada and Genichiro Inokuma, whose artworks received international fame (10). The Japanese contemporary artists engaged in experimentation in artistic practices including the performing arts and digital media. Most contemporary artists made their reflections about social issues like public safety, sexuality, and consumerism (Lloyd, 9). This led to the rise of innovations in architectural designs and maximizing consumer interest. Consumerism became more prominent in contemporary art, especially the globalization of Japanese indigenous contemporary art in entertainment such as Manga (comics) and Anime (animated films) (18). Because the world had high regard towards manga and anime, the Japanese artist integrated the shared collective values of Japan in manga and anime that reintroduced a new global vision of Japanese identity (18).
