Many economists and pundits (pointing to Brexit and Trump) have argued that we are moving to a world of “deglobalization”—the forces of globalization are moving in reverse.
* What are the arguments for free trade and globalization, especially concerning developing countries? Why do the VAST majority of economists support free trade?
Globalization refers to the process by which small and local businesses expand internationally. This opened an international opportunity for free trade where trade policies do not restrict quotas and tariffs.
Various arguments originated from these two factors that mainly influence global trading. Both of these have advantages and disadvantages depending on the economic stability of the country.
Because of this, arguments have been continuously presented and some of these are as follows: 1) Free trade allows for a better transaction especially for the developing countries. This opened an opportunity for their market to sell the goods in their countries at a cheaper price secondary to the reduced restriction in tariffs and value-added taxes. However, in most cases, this was proven otherwise. Trends have shown that the big G20 countries, most include the Americas, European Countries, and the Middle East, augmented the restrictions in export and import processes since 2008.; 2) Hypothetically, the rivalry among countries is supposed to propel the prices of goods downwards. However, companies in several countries drift toward manipulating the currency of their country to acquire a price advantage. This makes the competition tougher for the developing countries CITATION Col15 \l 1033 (Collins).; 3) Developing countries are allowed to open new job opportunities secondary to the building of the multinational companies from developed countries to the developing countries. This accounts for the job openings in the manufacturing and assembly industry. However, developed countries opt to employ workers from the developing countries at a cheap price, thereby making their salaries below or at the minimum wage level.; and 4) A lower number of child labor has been reported due to free trade and globalization since these children are often used as a substitute for equipment, whereas globalization allowed for the purchase of new technologies for the companies. Hence, lowering the rate of child labor CITATION Moh19 \l 1033 (Mohr).
Despite the disputes, the majority of the economists favor globalization and free trade since these contribute to an increased gross income for families and higher rates of productivity over time in most countries. Moreover, each country will have greater access to other markets, making a variety of choices for all CITATION Ros16 \l 1033 (Rosenfeld).
. b. Briefly discuss the role of the WTO.
The World Trade Organization is responsible for governing the trade agreements, representing as a forum for trade negotiations, resolving the disputes, assessing the national trading policies, enhancing the trading capacities of the developing economies, and collaborating with international organizations CITATION Wornd \l 1033 (World Trade Organization).
Additionally, the World Trade Organization ove...
