Patriarchal Systems
Patriarchy describes a social system where men are primary in power and dictates the rules, and takes control of political leadership, social privilege, and control of the property. Patriarchy is a negative way, where women have no say, and men do as they please in society. The aspect of patriarchal systems is well revealed in Jamaica Kincaid's "Girl" and Maxine Hong Kingston's "No Name Woman." Patriarchy is revealed through how the female characters are treated, how everyone has a predetermined attitude towards them in society.
In Kincaid's book "The Girl," we get a light on how the society is men controlled through how it treats the women. The book shows us how patriarchy runs by just giving rules to someone and how everyone has some given duties in society. The book shows the strict and numerous expectations put upon women and how they are expected to serve to meet the desires of society. It is clear that if the women did not live by these set standards and carry out the roles and responsibilities assigned to them, they are not thought to be good or of quality. The book shows these expectations through a mother who is teaching her daughter lessons about the manners in which she must go through life and perform her responsibilities and perform her physical and emotional duties as a woman. How the mother and the daughter relate is a clear reflection of how society interacts with women.
From the book, it is clear that a patriarchal system can be propagated traditionally. Throughout the book, the mother is seen trying to get certain beliefs from her culture to the daughter. The daughter is being taught how to be a good woman by doing domestic work. The daughter is constantly reminded how to become the "perfect" woman to meet the expectations of the society they live in. The roles and behaviors that the daughter is taught to adopt are a direct reflection of how women's roles should relate to those of men.
Kincaid shows us how the patriarchal society is turning the women into performers by leaving most of the family responsibilities to them. What is expected of a woman is transferred from society to the girl through her mother. The girl is taught the various ways in which she should serve men, as seen when the mother tells her daughter 'how to do different things. The girl is told, 'this is how to iron your father's khaki shirt so that it does not have crease' (Kincaid 54). The daughter is being taught how to make men look presentable by preparing their clothes. It is clear that the mother does it for her husband, and the girl is expected to do it. The girl is also told, 'this is how to behave in the presence of men' (Kincaid 53), which indicates that other than making sure men are taken care of, women must also perform their behavior in a way that makes men happy and satisfied.
