What do we mean by the term "purpose" in our writing? Here is the definition from our textbook:
PURPOSE: A writer's goal; to explore ideas, to express oneself, to entertain, to demonstrate learning, to inform, to persuade, and so on. The purpose is one element of the RHETORICAL SITUATION (see pages 55-56).
As we listen to the audio of Howard White’s essay, mark the text (or take notes) with whatever annotations you already know how to use.

The speaker is Howard White. The audience is everyone, including young people. White’s purpose is to drive across the message that saying hello is a personal responsibility. I think that White’s diction is perfect for this piece of work. There are no pompous words or phrases, which would make it hard for the younger audience to understand his message.
I believe that White intended to help the reader understand why it is essential to say hello. For instance, in the essay, White says that "I remembered after a few years of passing by the founder, I had the courage to ask him for a meeting." This sentence highlights the importance of saying hello. While it is likely to bring great opportunities, it helps one develop courage in any given situation. ...
