The writing style in Runaway utilizes metaphor and symbolism. The settings of the scenes are described in a way that gives the imagination more detail to focus on. Runaway Carla went down from the bus to run away from her husband Clark. This is already her 2nd time to run way, the first time was when she ran away from her parents in order to marry her present lover. The tinted glass of the bus represent the feeling of “uncertainty”. The story presents the feeling of pursuing something due to a strong feeling. It presents different dimensions to being a “runaway”. It gives the mood of being “out of control. The story is able to put the reader in a state of suspense. This can be seen in the subtleness hidden in the words and the narrative. The dynamic of Sylvia Jamieson and Carla reveals itself as a girl on girl romance. Sylvia was also the one who pushes Carla to run away, as she is thinking what is best for her. However, it seems that is is not really dedicated and having doubts with her desires. There is metaphor and allegory to the story which relate the elements to the protagonist. Carla’s pet goat mirrors the essence of the runaway, and Clark even commented that "Flora might have just gone off to find herself a billy" which obviously parallel Carla’s decision to run away and marry Clark.
