A Rose for Emily is a story about a unique life of a lady named Miss Emilly Grierson. The woman was a very secretive person, and nobody got access to her private life except her Negro manservant cum gardener. Despite her coming from an affluent and rich background, Miss Emily Grierson never got a chance to be married, as she seemed to be too proud or disinterested with men. In essence, the story lingers on how the conflict between Miss Emily and the city tax collectors in tax remission. The irony here is that the earlier city authorities that were headed by one Colonel Sartorius had exempted Miss Emily from paying taxes. The reason of this favoritism by the colonel is however not made clear in this story. To cover this plan from others, and even to miss Emily herself , Colonel Sartorius had invented a vague a story which went that miss Emily’s father had “loaned a substantial amount of money to the town” when he was alive (p290).
