Wilson's Success in Fences
Fences by August Wilson was one of the most exciting plays of the 20th century. His playwriting talent made him one of the most famous figures in American theatres. The play is an interesting one since the author highlights the life of black Americans in the 1950s. August Wilson uses a blend of poetry and African-American dialect to come up with a unique play. August also manages to use a lofty tone to make it easy for regular readers and audiences to read and understand his message. One of the things that made Wilson's Fences successful is his storytelling ability and the use of drama and tragedy.
August Wilson's use of poetic realism is one of the things that make fences an exciting and successful play. He incorporates daily life situations, including Troy and Bono's lives as Garbage collectors. "It is Friday night, payday, and the one night of the week the two men engage in a ritual of talk and drink. TROY is usually the most talkative and at times he can be crude and almost vulgar, though he is capable of rising to profound heights of expression. The men carry lunch buckets and wear or carry burlap aprons and are dressed in clothes suitable to their jobs as garbage collectors" (Wilson 15). Wilson avoids complexity in the play, and as seen in the opening sentences, he describes the ordinary lives of two friends who are used to sitting in Troy's yard and sipping beer while holding a conversation on different topics. At first, the opening dialogue between Bono and Troy seems too casual, but along the way, it gets serious as the two discuss various issues regarding their work. The play gets better as it progresses and through the lives of Troy's family.
Wilson's ability to tell a story in a captivating way is the second reason for his success with the Fences play (Wilson 2). Most play writers can write good plays that have essential life lessons. Still, they cannot captivate the audience through proper storytelling and the ability to reveal emotions and feelings. Wilson's ability to captivate and paint sentiment made Fences stand out from other plays, including his first play Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.
