The campus carry law was implemented in 2016 and allowed students to carry concealed guns. The law included Texas to a group of states allowing students to carry concealed handguns in the United States. Multiple factors compelled Texas to pass the law allowing students to have concealed handguns at school. For instance, the state was concerned about the security of students. However, universities and colleges are essential components in American society. In addition to being an area filled with buildings and people, it is a learning environment with students from every corner of the world that come to study or enhance their knowledge in a specific field. Carrying guns around school jeopardises students’ security, although the guns facilitate self-defence. It can lead to an increased rate of shootings and homicide in schools. The paper denoted why campus carry is wrong and should not be allowed in Texas.
The security of students is threatened when some students are carrying guns at school. Allowing people other than law enforcement personnel to carry concealed guns on campus will make students feel less safe. Students with guns can form a militia serving as a student-police force that disrupts school learning activities. For instance, Kaitlyn Hamby, a Florida State University senior, deduced that she dealt with a similar incident in 2014 after a student opened fire in a campus library, injuring several students before police shot him (Lyons). The law affects students’ security since their safety is not guaranteed when shootings occur anytime in campus environments. Safety in school is a crucial factor that facilitates academic success for students by providing an opportunity to achieve academic excellence in a safe and caring surrounding. The law will demean school unity and increase violence on campuses. Availability of concealed guns at school will result in the loss of innocent lives, making families less secure in sending their children to school.
Additionally, carrying concealed guns at school will cause distractions. Students cannot concentrate on their studies knowing that someone has a weapon and are unaware of their intentions. The nervous feeling and inability to focus on studies negatively impact students’ grades. Also, a gun can go off by mistake and injure an innocent student. As such, the safety of students under the campus carry law is endangered. Security plays a significant role in students’ grades since it facilitates concentration and success. School safety ensures students are protected from any form of violence, weapon exposure, bullying, and use of drugs in the school environment.
