Effective Approaches in Leadership and Management
Bullying in the nursing field is a prevalent issue that begins before joining nursing school and can persist throughout a nurse's career. There is a significant percentage of nurses who quit their first job due to negative behavior by co-workers, and issues of bullying can cause the rising shortage of nurses. A facility with a bullying culture will significantly affect the work environment, thus deteriorating the quality of care provided to patients. The first step towards addressing nurse bullying is knowing that the problem exists and raising awareness of its dangers. Nurse leaders also need to significantly mitigate risk factors and create and enforce an antibullying policy. It is also essential that nurses understand that they have the responsibility to change the culture as bullying should have no place in the nursing profession.
Workplace bullying among nurses has a negative impact on the quality of care provided to patients. In reference to Al Omar et al. (2019), workplace bullying amongst healthcare works is associated with a rise in sickness and absenteeism. Work conditions are likely to affect healthcare workers. Bullying only makes the working environment far more unbearable—the hostile working environment caused by bullying results in compromised quality of care and patient safety. For instance, it hinders workers from working as a team and also prevents communication, which is necessary to ensure that patients are given the right medicine at the right time as shifts change. The fear instilled in the victim of bullying might prevent them from speaking out. In addition, stress is due to the unconducive environment. This causes an increase in medical errors, which significantly affects the safety of patients in the facility, and their quality of care due to absenteeism and incompetence.
Professional Standards
Professional Standards should be demonstrated in healthcare facilities to help rectify the issue of nurse bullying and maintain professional conduct. The American Nurse Association (ANA) states that registered nurses have a shared responsibility to not only create but also sustain a culture free of incivility, one of respect, and without workplace bullying and violence (Simpson, 2016).). Everyone working in the healthcare setting is morally, legally, and ethically responsible for ensuring that the working environment is healthy and safe for nurses, the entire healthcare team, the patients, families, and the entire community. Nurses are entrusted with the lives of vulnerable individuals who are patients and should have the best interest at heart in their practice. Registered nurses need to commit to creating a safe and trustworthy environment that will help promote respect and dignity to mitigate bullying in healthcare facilities.
Roles of Leaders and Managers in Mitigating Nursing Bullying
