Emily Dickinson
1129.
Tell all the Truth but tell it slant-
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth's superb surprise
As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind

Success is counted sweetest

By those who ne'er succeed.

To comprehend a nectar

Requires sorest need.
Not one of all the purple Host
Who took the flag today
Can tell the definition
So clear of Victory.
As he defeated—dying—
On whose forbidden ear

The distant strains of triumph

Burst agonized and clear!

Much Madness is divinest Sense --
To a discerning Eye --
Much Sense -- the starkest Madness --
'Tis the Majority
In this, as All, prevail --
Assent -- and you are sane --
Demur -- you're straightway dangerous --
And handled with a Chain --

On the other side of the coin, those who have never succeeded and lack the probability of doing so feel the sweetness of the success: they better appreciate something they are longing for because they can better comprehend how valuable it is. These people have a great distance from success, yet they appreciate it deeply. Success, therefore, is valued most by those who have failed or those who never succeed, just in the same way a defeated dying warrior understands and is more reflective of failure and yearns for victory more than a victorious army does. Dickison gives the below examples to support her argument.
(I). A blind man knows the value of the eyes more than a man with his full sight.
(ii). To comprehend a nectar requires sorest needs.
"Much Madness is Divinest Sense" Argument
Dickson argues that what is taken as being insanity can sometimes be sanity and what is taken as being sanity can be insanity; therefore, the argument is debatable. The truth of what is regarded as insanity can only be discovered by those who can think rationally, fairly, and independently without conside...
