Woodrow Wilson had initially proclaimed that the United States would remain neutral in the war, despite housing most immigrants. However, several events had fueled the United States to join the war. President Woodrow Wilson was justified to involve the United States in World War I because of several factors, including the Lusitania, the invasion of Belgium, vested financial interests to allies, unrestricted submarine warfare, and the Zimmerman telegram.
The RMS Lusitania was one of the significant reasons that prompted Woodrow Wilson's decision to involve the United States of America in the First World War (O'Toole 155). At the beginning of the year, 1915 Germany had introduced a law that allowed warfare in the Atlantic Ocean. The law meant that merchant vessels were being hunted and sunk without warning. The RMS Lusitania was a ship that left New York in May 1915 and was traveling to England. However, six days later, after it had left New York, it was torpedoed at the Ireland Coast, and out of the one thousand nine hundred passengers, only seven hundred and sixty-four passengers survived (O'Toole 209). Thus, out of the one thousand one hundred and ninety-eight lives that were lost, one hundred and twenty-eight of them were Americans, and thus was a huge tragedy for the Americans. This caused a lot of outrage among the American people and how they viewed the naval policy that the Germans instituted.
The invasion of Belgium by the Germans was also another crucial reason why the Americans joined the First World War (Pope 1). The event happened in 1914, and Germany was accused of the heinous act it had done unto Belgium. The injustice propaganda done unto Belgium had spread like fire and showcased how Germany committed the heinous act. Consequently, as a result, the propaganda triggered sentiments against the Germans.
The reintroduction of unrestricted submarine warfare was also another reason that prompted Woodrow Wilson to suspend the rights and the passage of the new laws (O'Toole 202). Germany had declared unrestricted submarine warfare, later provoking the United States into joining the war. However, based on the declaration, Germany had predicted that they would overcome the British before the United States of America would join the war. However, after the Germans' declaration of unrestricted submarine warfare, several cargo ships were sunk without warning.
