The Value of Art and Alternative Art Forms

How to prepare for this assignment  

Read the following from textbook: pages 30-35, 252-253, 350-352, 396, 547, 657-658.                           

Answer all of the following  

 1. Find one artwork from the textbook and reflect upon ways in which it is valued.

a)      Identify the work (artist name, title, material/media, dimensions, date, and location) and attach, embed, or link the image of your artwork in your post.  

• If you choose to embed a large image, please re-size it first so that it fits the screen.  • Ensure that your image is not password protected

b)     Discuss the work   ’s value from at least two (2) of the following perspectives: economic, political, religious, cultural or aesthetic value.           

c)      Finally, what value do you place on this work? What value do you think others place on it?               

2. In the presentation and readings, you were presented with artworks that challenge traditional notions of art, including works that utilize appropriation, are created with alternative processes (installation, earthworks, and performance) or are examples of conceptual art. Demonstrating an understanding of at least one of these artistic practices, answer the following:

a)      How do the above practices compare with “traditional” media, such as painting, sculpture, and drawing? What are your thoughts about these alternative art forms? Use an artwork example to illustrate your position (do not use the same artwork example you used in question #1).  Note: This artwork example does not have to be from your textbook.

b)     Are there any artworks encountered in our course material or elsewhere that you have had trouble understanding or accepting as art? Why? Which, if any, do you find refreshing or inspiring?

3. Respond critically and thoughtfully to one other peer’s post. As you respond to your peer, you may consider one or more of the following:

• Consider what your initial reactions are to an artwork example the peer provided. How is the work they discussed similar or different from your choice?
• Give a different opinion and explain if you agree or disagree with the peer’s point of view.
• Answer the peer’s question or help clarify a point. 
• Add resources or examples to expand the discussion.
• Use any other approaches that promote critical thinking.
