What We Learned From the First Decades of Film
The film industry has grown up tremendously. Today, the industry is booming, with more individuals interested in the industry. Being a movie star is a dream come true for many individuals. Indeed, filmmakers continue to gain huge commercial success, especially because of the Internet, which facilitates the distribution of films worldwide. The film industry has established itself as a viable industry where many people earn a living. The industry's growth is a demonstration of the progress that has taken place since the 19th century. The huge movie industry individuals know today had its humble beginnings in the 19th century. During that time, the invention of photography and later the illusion of motion was critical. The invention of the kinescope was a major leap for the whole industry. This paper will focus on the late 19th century when technological advancement permitted the emergence of silent films. The examination of the industry's history follows the complex developments that have taken place over the years. The first decades of the film present various learning lessons that individuals today can emulate. The paper presents lessons learnt from the initial decades of the film and how it has enabled the modern-day movie industry to advance.
Every invention and innovation in the film created an international movement. The inventors in one country used and improved the inventions of others in other countries. For instance, the start of motion picture technology in the late 19th century was critical in creating a foundation for advancing an entire industry. In 1891, Thomas Edison partnered with William Dickson and invested in kinescope. The device would later become the predecessor of the motion picture projector. The device allowed viewers to experience the illusion of moving images (Crosland). As the device continued gaining popularity, the Edison Company would install the machine on hotel lobbies and amusement parks. Edison was, however, reluctant to project his images for audience viewing since he thought that such a move would be less profitable. However, since Edison had not got an international patent for the invention, variations of the device were soon produced and distributed all over Europe. The new form of entertainment became a success as more and more people purchased the machine. Manufacturers considered more ways of having the images on larger screens. In 1895, Auguste and Louis Lumière patented the Cinématographe. The device was a lightweight device that could easily allow for outdoor filming (Lumiere). The demand for motion pictures continued to grow, with more people appreciating the innovation in the industry.
Furthermore, the film industry was ready to embrace technological advancements and utilize them to develop the industry. Today, cinema is a medium for mass entertainment and communication, courtesy of the technological advancements that have taken place over the years (Benagr 15).
