Evolution of Movies from Joke Centered to Jokeless Films Depicted in 'Girl's Trip' 2017

Essay Instructions:

A couple of quick reminders. Make sure to choose a specific film you love. There is no reason to write about something you don't care about. The film needs to be chosen from the genres of comedy, drama/melodrama. Please specifically explore the director, actors, individual scenes, and always mention the year it was made.) This should also be a film NOT COVERED in any of our modules. 1500 to 2000 words. DO not give a plot overview. Narrow down your scope to what is most interesting to you. Give a unique and creative perspective.
Make sure to situate the film within the genre cycle (primitive, classical, revisionist, or parodic phases) and explain why you think it best fits there.
Description
Focusing on the genres we've covered so far, choose a comedy, drama/melodrama, or horror film we did not cover in class, and situate it within the genre cycle where you think it best fits. While considering the progress and changes the genre went through over the years, discuss how and why your film's attributes and tropes come across as belonging specifically to the primitive, classical, revisionist, or parodic phases, and relate your film to others which came before and/or after it in the cycle. Be sure to include specific examples of audiovisual tropes from key scenes of your choice to back up your argument.
Important
Please refrain from focusing on the plot summary!

Girls Trip 2017

Institutional affiliation:
Introduction
Girl’s trip is an American comedy starring Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish, and Jada Pinkett smith. Released in 26th of July 2017, the film now ranks among the top 10 comedies that have elicited the greatest laughter in and outside the united states. The film, which was directed by Malcolm D. Lee and written by Tracy Oliver and Kenya Barras, and typically tells a story of four forty something years ladies on the loose. Unlike several other comedy films, Girls’ trip breathes new life into the comedy genre and makes it known that comedy knows no age and does not necessarily have to be joke specific like it has been the case for many years before. It is a party movie with women creating the best out of everything that comes their way. Girl’s trip was and is still a success in the comedy scene and its impact on the comedy era is significant. Starring an all-black cast, it has gone an extra mile to encourage production of more interesting female comedies mainly because its release has further encouraged the underrepresented demographics to step up in the comedy genre. According to the film director, the purpose of Girls Trip was to offer an alternative to the negative reality TV shows where women were constantly fighting and prove that women could instead get along and build positive relationships through comedy. Girl’s trip did not only portray real relationships between protagonists but also showed the lighter side of black women, everyone can enjoy regardless of their color or ethnicities. Girls trip attributes and tropes come across as belonging specifically to the parodic phase.
Plot Summary
Several comedy movies featuring women have been released in the past few years. In most of these comedy movies including Rough Night (2017), Bridesmaid (2009) and Snatched, audiences have seen women add little humour and, in some instances, their behavior goes overboard such that they fail to make audience laugh. More so, in some women drink, make dry jokes, thus disappointing viewers and ending up receiving the lowest rating. But clearly this is certainly not the case with Malcolm D. Lee, film Girls Trip (2017). Girls’ Trip has become a success where many other comedies fail, maybe due to its perfectly matched cast. Anyone notes that the film is fun and has some exaggerated humour but does not force laugher at all. It is based solely on four best friends in their forties, well known as the Flossy Posse, have grown apart for many years. But when one of them (Ryan Pierce, Regina hall) is offered an opportunity to speak at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, she decides to tag along all her three friends (Lisa, Dina, and Sasha) with a sole goal of turning the work vacation into a Girls trip (Girls Trip, 2017). It is this trip that rekindles their sisterhood and also rediscover their wild sides of drinking, romancing, and excessive dancing. Ryan had a reputation to protect but did not waste any time in getting into the mood and hitting clubs wearing some of the tightest dresses and drinking herself to excess. Throughout these encounters, the women learn lessons, reignite their sisterhood, and discover themselves. Entirely, th...
