Make a discussion to Instructor's Statement: The life of Henry David Thoreau is New England's example of the early 19th century American yearning for reform and opposition to a growing industrializing America. What would later be categorized as the American intellectual "Renaissance", Thoreau's writing was a foundation of transcedentalism, along with the works of other authors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller and Herman Melville. However, one can also argue that Thoreau, like his fellow writers, were also traitors to the American cause and mission, not willing to support either their local or national authorities. The idea of Walden Pond is a utopian ideal of societal ignorance, a retreat into a mental or political hermitage that benefits no American society of any age or generation, whether in 1849 or 2020.

Edwin Forest and William Charles Macready competed for an American audience (Escott and Paterson, 268). In 1849 May, they appeared in New York City. Posters put up opposing Macready were a symbol of foreign rule. Twenty-two people died in the meeting and thirty-six injured as the police were firing into the air while protecting Macready. Frances Trollope (1832) described the audience as incessant. In my opinion, this was a good direction to redefine the basis of American life that was based on race, ethnic, gender, and patriotic divisions. There are evidence that at their times, theaters changed as cities grew. Such were examples picked by people who wished to push for other reforms in the country.
