PBS Nova checks in to see how the multi-decade restoration of the Parthenon is going. They find the restorers dealing with a massive jigsaw puzzle with pieces that are only slightly different, many of which are broken or missing, and the remaining pieces were reassembled wrong by the last restoration team. Introduction
Parthenon was a former temple in the ancient Athenian Acropolis. This temple was associated with the goddess of Athena whom the Athens considered to be their patron. This temple was initially constructed at around 447 BC. This was a time when the Athenian Empire was in total power over the Athens (Nova, 2008). The decorative sculptures of the temple pointed out to the advancements in the Greek art works. It is important to point out that the Ottoman conquered Athens and converted the temple into a mosque in the early 1940s. During this period, Venetian bombardment resulted into a great explosion that severely destroyed the Parthenon together with its sculptures. Years later, engineers and architects set out on a mission to restore the Parthenon and its sculptures. This essay brings out the challenges that the engineers and architects faced in their quest to restore the image of the Parthenon.
The Acropolis Restoration Project
After the destruction of the ancient Parthenon, it was a challenge trying to analyze the fragments of the temple. The temple had been built in less than a decade using marbles. There was a series of abuse and war at the time. Earthquakes struck the temple, people fought and all these culminated in the fall of the Sparta. The temple was converted from a temple to a church and then to a mosque. Attempts to restore the Parthenon during the 20th century led to even greater destruction. The restoration was faced with a lot of puzzles that proved a challenge to engineers and architects in the project (MacGregor, 152). These puzzles are covered in the sections that follow.
