The consequences of the 16th and 17th centuries’ religious upheavals profoundly impacted Europe and the wider world. The Protestant Reformation and the Counter-Reformation reshaped the spiritual landscape across Europe and led to the emergence of new denominations, such as Lutheranism and Calvinism. The emergence of new denominations, in turn, resulted in religious wars and conflicts, such as the Thirty Years War, which was bloody and destructive. Religion also played a role in the colonization of the New World, as European powers sought to spread their religious beliefs to the native populations. Consequently, the native populations were often subject to religious persecution and discrimination.
