Jarzombek and Hwangbo's article on Global in a Not-so-Global World (2011) discusses some of the challenges that global citizens face in a global world that is characterized by anti-global practices. These challenges include the split between modern and tradition where, in what the authors term as “instruction booklet number one”, there has been a great focus on history, religion, and culture, as part of national identity (p.60). Also, instead of learning about the history of others in a global capacity, the world has adopted a global culture of localism by focusing on national history and art (p.61). The second challenge is about language, where the authors discuss historical traditions and indigenous people. In many cases, indigenous tribes have been classified as backward classes, not only as a remnant of colonialism but also as “a conceit of civilization…(p.61)” Also, nations have moved from using the term “indigenous” to using the term “vernacular”, which is seen as an improvement (p.62). The third challenge is the studio teaching hesitance to address issues. Global is seen as the same as globalization (p.63). The author indicates that architecture has a role to play by ensuring that all buildings have a “global footprint (p.63).”
           The main response to this paper is based on how the authors articulate the relationship between architecture and a global world. Reading through the article, I understood how architectural studios can remove the anti-global practices that have made defining “global” a bit complex.
