In 1837, 97 electors in Washington County filed a petition with the U.S. Congress. Document Handout outlines the factors that may affect the efficiency of governments and laws. One of the factors highlighted therein is the right to vote and its consequences if abused (National Archives, Washington, D.C. par.4). In this regard, the petitioners mention the unprecedented influx of Roman Catholics and the subsequent right to vote. They contend that the principles that the Catholics espouse pose a threat to the nation. As such, they contend that they should be reviewed through legislation.
In the second chapter (Surrogate Slaves to American Dreamers) of her book, Helen Zin details how Asians infiltrated the Americas. She notes that Asians had settled in America long before its independence (Zin 23). She also reveals why most Asian immigrants went to America. Seeking better living conditions was the paramount reason. In addition, Zin underscores the significant contributions made by the Asians to their adopted land, despite myriad prejudices.
