 Elements in Washington's Farewell
Washington's advice in his farewell address was one of the significant legacies that have shaped America today. The speech was inscribed in the Philadelphia newspaper, whereby the document set the foundation for the U.S. future. It suggested how Americans should grow as a nation and laid a platform for the country's purpose. The primary purpose of Washington's farewell address was to announce that he would not be running for a third term of the presidency and to set an example for future presidents on how to relinquish power. In the farewell address, he warned against the proliferation of political parties, sectionalism, and overindulgence in foreign affairs. Washington feared the re-direction of American purpose that would be caused by being overly involved in other countries. He further stated that sectionalism could result in the interest of political parties being put first by voters and forgetting those of the country.
