Hesiod's Theogony is a poetic description of the origin of the Greek gods and the conflicts that influenced the relations between the ancient Greek gods. The gods governed the Cosmos, and the poet who wrote Theogony highlighted the belief that there were contests among the ancient Greek gods. Documenting about the ancient Greek gods in a poem provides insights on how religion influenced the Greek religious practices, social system and worldview. In “The Birth of Zeus” there is focus on Greek myths on Zeus the king/father of gods who had daughters, while the elements of land, fire, heaven and sea are mentioned highlighting their links to ancient Greek mythology (Fordham University). Epic poems, lyric poems and architecture highlight the changes in ancient Greek society from Early Greece to a more organized state.
Archeology is one source utilized to understand Ancient Greece, but the people left a lot of literature, and this provides more insightful information on how the people were organized and lived. In looking at the history of ancient Greek civilization, the cultural, historical political and religious subjects all informed how the Greeks interacted and understood the world. Similarly, the time periods from early Greece to ancient Greece point to the transformation in the society where civilization and renaissance played a critical role in Greece’s resurgence. The emergence of permanent villages followed by the Bronze Age allowed the Greek to grow in power. As Greece is surrounded by sea, the ancient Greeks were able to get into contact with people from diverse backgrounds, which provided learning opportunities.
