1)    Pick two of the following groups (African Americans, women, Chinese, Hispanics) and explain the impact of western settlement on them.  What specific problems or obstacles did the face?  Which groups do you think faced the greatest challenges and which group do you think adapted most successfully?

2)    What were the major problems faced by industrial workers in the late 19th century?  How are they similar or different from issues today?  How did workers try to fix these problems and what were the goals ad tactics of the various labor organizations during this time period?  How successful where these organizations in achieving their goals?  Why?

3)    Describe the life among the working class, the middle class and the urban elite.  What distinguished each group from the others and how did members of each group maintain this distinction.  How does Social Darwinism enter into this?  Which group(s) would likely support Social Darwinism and why?  Which group(s) would oppose it and why.  Were City Bosses, like William Tweed, part of the solution to the problems in the cities, or were they part of the problem?  Explain.

Introduction
The United States underwent a massive increase in industrial growth during the late 19th century, characterized by the expansion of manufacturing industries, which hired many industrial workers. During this time, the living standards of the majority of the industrial workers improved. However, industrial workers also faced significant problems at work. This essay will discuss the main challenges encountered by industrial workers in the late 19th century, their similarities and differences from the problems today, and how they fixed those problems. The essay will also discuss the goals and strategies of labor organizations during the 19th century and their success.
Major Problems Faced by Industrial Workers in the Late 19th Century
Industrial workers endured long working hours, unfavorable working conditions, and low wages. They were required to work at least ten hours every day for six days a week, and some even worked longer hours (Eissa and Köseoğlu). In addition, industrial workers endured poor working conditions, some of which were unsafe due to poor government regulations. The deplorable working environment led to increased industrial accidents whereby workers got hurt, and some even died while working. Also, most industrial workers were underpaid, with employers hiring the cheapest laborers, especially children and women.
