The Overcoat (which is sometimes translated as The Cloak) is a story by Nikolay Gogol. Through the story, the author reveals the evils perpetrated by the bureaucracies within the government. Through the narration, we can clearly see the theme of common suffering and how conditions in the contemporary life affect people. One of the most important things revealed through the story was how the narrator fails to state the details because he does not want to offend the official. In this essay, we will discuss the lesson Gogol is teaching about Russia, as well as the main challenges and injustices that are prevalent in the Russian society, proposing solution to these prevailing challenges.
As the story states, an insult towards a Russian citizen is an insult to the state. This is demonstrated through the injustices that are explained through the story. An example is when a senior police officer complains about the problems within the Russian government. There were many people that were trying to malign the name of the officer because of her insult toward the government. Through the narration, Gogol also shows the insipid life of Akaky Akakievich, which works with the Russian government in a particular department that remains anonymous. Based on the author’s description, the man in unattractive and has a strange name that means “shoe.” It is sad that the author acknowledges that Akaky Akakievich can never be given any other name. another meaning of his name is that the social conditions defining one’s life are directly related to the accomplishments in life (Gogol). This picture shows us what Russia is. As noted earlier, an insult to any Russian citizen is also an insult to the state. Therefore, Gogol is trying to reveals that ills and negativities affecting Russia through Akaky Akakievich.
