Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Tick.. Tick.. BOOM!"

Essay Instructions:

Part 1
Lin-Manuel Miranda's adaptation of Jonathan Larson's Tick, Tick... Boom! (2021) showcasing wonderful performances by Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp and Vanessa Hudgens. Please watch this newly released Musical (which explores Jonathan Larson's creative process of writing his revisionist 1996 musical Rent) and post a 200-word minimum personal response, talking about specific scenes, themes and feelings you noticed. It is streaming free on Netflix as well as playing in theaters. Make sure to compare specific scenes from the film to other musicals that we may have studied this semester as well as other musicals you may have watched prior to this class.
Part 2
International cinema in the 2000s is as diverse as American cinema. Lars von Trier's Melancholia (2011) is part of a movement that is counter to Edgar Wright, Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Tom Tykwer's film. It is called "slow" cinema. This type of film is attempting to draw in audiences by clearing away all of the loud noise, fast cuts and chatty talking that we learned about in last week's module.
Is by one of my favorite contemporary filmmakers is the Taiwanese master Tsai Ming-liang. Making movies for close to 30 years, his desire to allow his characters to inhabit the spaces they exist in can cause many audiences to fall asleep, get up and walk out of the theater and even provoke some viewers to start yelling at the screen. On the other hand, those that connect with the endurance tests that Tsai creates often uncover a deeply profound meaning from his films.
One of his most rarely screened movies is Walker (2012) containing his alter-ego Lee Kang-sheng, who has acted in most if not all of his films and takes place on the streets of Taipei, the capitol of Taiwan. Please give yourself some space (30 minutes to be exact) to sit down and watch this mini masterpiece. Turn off all your notifications, leave your phone in another room and put yourself to the "slow" cinema test.
Be honest with your experience (and make sure to finish it, no scrubbing through it either!) Write about what you noticed in the film as well as what happened inside your body/mind and spirit. You may find out that you truly have been brainwashed by the manic modern movies of Hollywood and that "slow cinema" is quite a different experience. This could even change your life.

Film Analysis
Part I
Tick Tick ... Boom! is arguably one of the best films I have watched in the year. The biographical musical drama film directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda is from a screenplay based on a 90s stage musical of Jonathan Larson. The film showcases an aspiring musician torn between his dreams, love life, friends, HIV/AIDs epidemic, and desire to impress his music idol. I noticed that the protagonist desires to make everyone happy. He is in a confused mental state because he wishes to be everywhere simultaneously. He, however, wishes to pursue his career and chooses to go ahead with his music. Larson loses his girlfriend in the process and also messes up his musical performance.
I feel that though he has a dream, Larson is not very decisive; he envisions a future in the music industry and risks his happiness and love. Particularly, I liked the scene where Michael confronts him after ruining his advertisement performance. Michael, his friend, feels that Larson would have been better off going with his girlfriend and starting a new life somewhere else. He considers the musical career a non-profitable venture and believes it was better for Larson to find a better job. I think the romantic aspect of the film is carried on throughout the plot; many people struggle with love and balance with their life. Additionally, the world/so...
