Liang Qichao on his trip to America
This tale revolves around the observations of Liang QIchao about the western society, which he compares to his own, China. The author introduces his perspective about the overall design of the western city New York. He reiterates that the city is very progressive, and at the same time still have problems of poverty and lack of infrastructure. Lian Qichao observed that the technology for travel and communication is advanced. He mentions how tall buildings are a common sight, and how the systems of society resemble those of nature. He likened pigeon coops to houses, centipedes for metro rails and trains, and spiderwebs to electrical wires.
The author is amazed about the progress of New York but at the same time acknowledges that it also has some trouble in governance. There are still many parts of the city whose members do not have a good quality of life. Liang mentions that there is a large disparity of the rich and the poor and that there is a lack of empathy from the highest members of society. Liang compares how the capitalist system was able to create an abundance of wealth creating jobs and new opportunities for societal growth.
This article provides an inner perspective of a Chinese man who wants to know how to make his society a better place. Liang’s notion was to observe the western society so that he could reflect within himself about his own country. He noted certain key points about the capitalist system and how it advocates private ownership. Liang gave details about how the production of services and goods, the capacity of governing bodies to distribute them, and how their systems earn revenue. He saw a great difference between the American’s and Chinese’s culture of how people relate and create. He saw that there is a fundamental core to each expression of culture, such that Americans have a different syntax with the Chinese. He notes this in certain differences in walking, talking, and interacting. Americans have a focus on protecting their human rights, self interests, market competition and minimum government input and intervention. This translates to certain lifestyles of the people.
