GIS6983 Ascope Assignment: QUEENS VILLAGE NY ASSESSMENT

Essay Instructions:

Your assignment is to identify some demographic categories (age, gender, income levels, homes, key events, people with power/influence, critical infrastructure, locations etc...) and quantify some demographics (population) if a terrorist shooting incident were to occur in a town/city. You will cover these topics using the ASCOPE Tool for an area that you are familiar with. Select your hometown (QUEENS VILLAGE NY 11429 ZIP CODE) , where you are currently living, or a town that you are able to gather information about. If you select a city, choose a smaller neighborhood or portion of the city to make your data manageable for this assignment. For this exercise, you will use demographics from the U.S. Census (or any other open source data you want to add). Think of this as though you are providing an intelligence report to Local, State and Federal authorities indicating the amount of risk and vulnerability of the population in your area. Use your own perceptions for what the key features are in town, such as who you think is important, what holidays or local festivals draw big crowds to a certain area, what structures are vulnerable, etc.
You will fill out the attached Excel spreadsheet with the data (at least 5 items for each category of ASCOPE (Areas, Structures, Capabilities, Organizations, People, Events). Review the ASCOPE presentation for how to accomplish and portray this information.
Task / Deliverable:
You must provide a report or Presentation (using MS Word or PowerPoint) providing some maps, methods, and written analysis quantifying and identifying some of the important population and demographic categories at risk from a terrorist shooting incident. Utilize the information from your spreadsheets. Submit both your Excel spreadsheet and the Presentation files for your assignment. There is an example ASCOPE in the Excel document.

Additionally, it is located within Queens County. Queens's village guarantees its residents of an urban-suburban mixed feel. Notably, most residents are homeowners. Queens's village also boasts numerous coffee shops, restaurants, and parks. There are also public schools that have been rendered above average. Notably, the percentage population of children below eighteen years is also slightly lower compared to other places in the country.
Neighborhood/ Community in Queens
Queens Village is as diverse as the city of New York. Most of the residents are immigrants hence it is indeed a true reflection of the diversity of the village. There are several neighborhoods like Astoria, Jamaica estates, Long Island City, Sunnyside, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, Bayside, Bellerose, The Rockaways, and Glendale. Most young Manhattan professionals prefer to stay in Astoria because of its affordable rates and closeness to New York City CBD. For instance, the rent charges are between 1000 USD to 2000 USD per month. Condos in the neighborhood go for an estimated amount of between 300,000 USD to 500,000 USD. The neighborhood is also famous for its beautiful parks, classy restaurants, gardens as well as its attractive and lively nightlife. On most occasions, all and sundry stay up until 4 am. For instance, there exists Astoria Park which is well shaded by the Hell Gate Bridge (“10 Best Neighborhoods In Queens To Move Into | Cube Smart,” 2015).
The suburban Jamaica Estates neighborhood boasts of privacy as well as spacious homes. Most families vouch for this neighborhood because it is secure and quiet. However, renting/owning a home in this part of Queens is costly since most of the homes sell for more than a million dollars. Additionally, the area can be accessed easily from Manhattan since the F line ends in the Jamaican Estate (“10 Best Neighborhoods In Queens To Move Into | Cube Smart,” 2015).
The Long Island city also boasts of everything that makes up New York. Talk of awesome art galleries, wonderful restaurants, as well hyped nightclubs. Escaping to Manhattan on the weekends is also easy and fast because it's only five minutes away from the #7 subway. It also has a wide range of housing options: condos, apartments, and small single-family homes too. Houses in the area are, however, not that big. Hence the need to reduce the number of possessions or one can opt for storage space in the Queens.
Sunnyside suburb is close to Manhattan and it also makes its residents feel at home. The area is mostly home to the middle class. It also has private community gardens that attract ...
