How Latin America Fell Behind the West Economically and Politically
Latin America has been lugging behind other American states like USA and Canada since independence though they are relatively well-off compared to some parts of sub-Saharan Africa. There are a number of reasons why Latin America is politically and economically not at par with North American countries like Canada and the USA. Latin America experiences tropical and sub-tropical climate which creates a conducive environment to myriad diseases. The forms of government in these areas lose most of its population to these diseases whilst spending a lot of resources in their prevention and cure.
Secondly, most Colonialists in USA and Canada came and settled in those countries permanently because of conducive climate hence less resources were exported to Europe CITATION Örn09 \l 1033 (Bodvarsson and Berg). The settlers began industrialization and reinvesting in the US and Canada colonies which helped them to become economically stable during and after colonization. On the other hand, Latin America colonialists came to look for resources to send them back to Spain CITATION Jim11 \l 1033 (Ollhoff). Political instability and corruption slowed economic growth and discouraged foreign investors.
