What were the disadvantages for Kuwait as a new country?
One of the disadvantages of Kuwait as a new country was the lack of a strong political participation in domestic affairs that distanced the public from governance. Another disadvantage was the lack of natural resources (other than oil) that challenged the nation’s economic development. Another disadvantage was Kuwait’s unskilled labor force that influenced the influx of foreigners to the country to participate in the oil industry. The foreigners, who took advantage of the unskilled labor, wanted to fulfil their agenda in the oil industry. Kuwaiti’s final disadvantage was inexperience in national defense. The lack of experience in national defense barred Kuwait from defending itself from the Ottomans, the Saudis, and the Persians. As a result, the Kuwaiti was forced to seek British help for protection.
What was the immediate threat to Kuwait after independence, and how did Kuwait deal with it?
The immediate threat to Kuwait after independence was the Iraqi invasion. Soon after the independence, the Iraqi government threatened to invade Kuwait acknowledging the new country as the heir to Ottoman lands. Kuwait dealt with this threat by quickly requesting British defense assistance. The British had promised this help despite acknowledging Kuwait’s independence. The British quickly deployed a significant ground in Kuwait to deter Iraqi aggression.
