Importance of The Causes of The Civil War 1831-1861
The American Civil War began in 1861 after decades of tension between the northern and southern states. The leading causes of the civil war were slavery, westward expansion, and states' rights. The Civil War remains the costliest and bloodiest war ever fought on American soil. More than 600,000 soldiers were killed and at least two million injured. When the Confederate army attacked Fort Sumter in Charleston Bay, the war began. Before President Lincoln could suppress the insurrection, four more states joined the Confederacy. In the following three years, the war would continue until the spring of 1865, when President Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States of America was captured. The U.S. defeated the resistance, and the war came to an end
