The American Civil War began in 1861 after decades of tension between the northern and southern states. The leading causes of the civil war were slavery, westward expansion, and states' rights. The Civil War remains the costliest and bloodiest war ever fought on American soil. More than 600,000 soldiers were killed and at least two million injured. The south, which was the most productive region, was left in ruin. Over the years, various studies have explored the causes of the civil war. In this paper, the author explores these causes with a specific focus on slavery and states' rights.
The Civil War started due to unresolved differences between the slave and free states. The issue at hand was the prohibition of slavery in territories that had not yet been absorbed into the United States (U.S). In 1860, Abraham Lincoln won the election on a pledge to end slavery. The result was the seceding of seven southern states that went on to form a new nation, the Confederate States of America. When the Confederate army attacked Fort Sumter in Charleston Bay, the war began. Before President Lincoln could suppress the insurrection, four more states joined the Confederacy. In the following three years, the war would continue until the spring of 1865, when President Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States of America was captured. The U.S. defeated the resistance, and the war came to an end.
Slavery was the leading and most important cause of the Civil War. America's southern states were, for a long time, the drivers of the country's economy. Tobacco, sugar cane, and cotton were the south's primary commodities, and human slavery was the fuel behind their production. In the south, slaves were more valuable than gold. The salve economy was essential to the south because it guaranteed output on a large scale and more landowners' profits. By the time of the Civil War, the south produced 75% of the world's cotton and created more millionaires than anywhere else in the Confederacy. However, this gave rise to a conflict between the Northern and Southern states. Northern states were not as wealthy in terms of farmable lands. Therefore, they wanted an end to slavery to quell the rising wealth of the south.
