Compose an original one- to two-page paper on a topic of your choice that relates to the assignment title and the time period under discussion in class this week. You will find resources, including a few primary sources that you may use, in the module entitled Imperialism and WW1.
Your paper should include the following:
1. Use your textbook or another online source to construct a brief introduction to the topic. Examples of topics for this section include "What overseas territories did the US take from Spain in the Spanish Cuban American War?" and "How did American imperialism differ from that of the European powers?" or "Why were some Americans isolationists?"
2. Provide a citation and a description for a primary source document such as a contemporary newspaper report, a government document, a letter or a work of art such as a photograph or painting that you believe will help me understand more about the topic. There are primary sources at the end of each chapter in the Yawp. You can also find primary sources using Google or another search engine. You will find many examples of primary sources in the Fordham Internet History Resource linked in your syllabus, and here:

Remember a primary source must be from the time period under discussion and must have been a direct observer or participant in the event under discussion. There are several examples of primary sources in the Module. Please use 12 point type and double line spacing for your paper. You will be graded based on the accuracy of your description of the issue you chose, on the aptness of your choice of primary source, and on the quality of the questions you raise.

How American Imperialism differ from European powers
According to most historians, the word empire might conjure images of Persian, British, and Rome empires which meant powers derived from colonization, military conquest, or direct resource exploitation (Johnson 29). Even though these colonies elucidated the meaning of empires, imperialism can take many forms, including a sovereign state subject to a single ruling authority. A century after gaining independence from British Empire, the U.S. started helping other nations gain independence. America provided military and economic assistance to Cuba, South Korea, and Vietnam, extending its influence and beginning imperialism. For example, in the late 19th century, the U.S. intervened in Cuba's struggle for independence, leading to the sinking of the U.S. Navy's battleship in Havana (Johnson 120). These events led to the Spanish-American war that saw the United States win in six months. Today, most historians seek to understand American imperialism through the country's intervention in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippines, and Cuba (Slater et al., 132). Even though European countries such as England had interests in other countries outside their border, American Imperialism sought these countries as markets for their products and not raw materials, a dimension that expanded their influence and dominance around the globe.
In the 18th century, America's interventions in the Middle East, Mexico, and China reflected its new policies and eagerness to intervene in other countries sovereignty to protect the United States' economic interests. In 1899, for example, even though the trade in Asia was comparatively small, it affected the country's Open-Door Policy which advocated for equal access of European countries to Chinese markets.
