Background
We have read and discussed, among other things: how the movement of peoples and ideas increased beginning in the 1500s, and the effects this had on different groups; how systems like slavery and capitalism (or liberal economics) disrupted societies and shaped the world we still live in; how technological development had complicated, sometimes even contradictory-seeming, consequences; how styles of thought — or ideologies — could be powerful enough to change the circumstances of millions of men and women; how historical change depended sometimes on chance events as well as on deep underlying causes; how nations tried, and succeeded, and failed, to gain supremacy over one another; and how peace and war came and went and came again.

IN AN ESSAY explain why, based on what we have read and discussed in class, you think the history of the modern world shows:
(a) that humanity has been on a path of progress toward more and more peace and prosperity for more and more people, OR
(b) that humanity has been in decline, and has shown itself more and more capable of greater and greater levels of cruelty, folly, and exploitation, OR
(c) that humanity tends neither to progress nor decline, but remains basically the same; it’s only that things appear a little different outwardly in different ages.

No. An essay should have as many paragraphs as you need to make your points, to explain your argument, etc. Likewise, there is no certain number of sentences necessary for a good paragraph.
Is it ok is my paper is a little shorter or longer?
Yes, as the instructions say, your paper should be approximately 1.5 pages, single spaced.
Do I have to reference a minimum number of sources?
It seems difficult to see how you could do this assignment well without referencing at least three sources that we’ve read.

The modern world is the period of human history that succeeded the Middle age. The early modern period started around the early 16th century. During this period, significant historical milestones include the Protestant Reformation and the Age of Discovery. On the flip side, the late modern period began approximately mid-18th century. French, Industrial, Russian, and American Revolutions occurred during this period. The history of the modern world has encountered several scenarios, both detrimental and positive, to the wellness of humans. The most significant track of the history of the modern world shows that humanity has been steadily progressing toward more and more peace and prosperity for most individuals globally.
One of the greatest progresses experienced in the modern world is the antislavery movement. In Europe and the US, the idea of antislavery started to gain momentum during the 19th century (“Notes on Imperialism” n.p). The slave trade was banned in numerous European nations and the United States. On the other hand, after Latin American nations attained independence from Spain during the early 19th century, they all abolished slavery. Today, several rights against forced labor have been enacted into constitutions that prevent numerous people from exploitation. Therefore, the fight against slavery has led to progress to more peace and prosperity as enslaved people used to undergo tough times.
The situations surrounding diverse classes and people and forming their characters are becoming more assimilated in the modern world. Initially, diverse ranks, neighborhoods, professions, and trades lived in different worlds (Mill n.p). Today, these things read similar things, observe the same things, listen to similar things, travel to the same places, and have the same rights, their hope and fears are directed toward similar objects and even mechanisms of asserting them (Mill n.p).
