Keep in mind your readings and the lectures. We have talked a lot about the discrimination and lack of opportunities in America for non-white peoples. It is important to understand that many white groups also found themselves on the lower rungs of the social ladder. This film is the story of the mostly white people living in the Appalachian Mountains in the 20th century, and the hardships they endured. To this day, these are impoverished people that lack opportunities for education and work.

Throughout American history, we see creative expressions that come from living lives of despair. The Blues, and Jazz music, developed from the urban squalor created by the Industrial Revolution. In this case, the roots of country music was born, originally called Hillbilly music. This emanated from these people’s lives as coal miners, working hard all their lives, but gaining little opportunities, and being impoverished. The American culture is unique because even when an environment seemed hopeless, a hopeful musical expression came out of it.

This film is not just about country music, although it tells part of that story. It also tells the story of 20th century Appalachia and the changes that the Depression, the New Deal, and World War II brought to the area.

Did the film tell a different story than the one you may have learned in high school? Were you surprised to see that a group of white people also experienced discrimination and ridicule, based on who they were, and their social station?

This assignment is a personal reflection that will not be shared with anyone. If you disagree with any of it, that certainly is your right. But give me some valid reasons WHY you disagree!

PLEASE!!! Do not simply retell me the story; I already know it very well. Tell me how the film influenced YOU! Was there information that you learned that you did not previously know? Did the film tell a different story than the one you learned in high school?

How did this film affect you emotionally AND intellectually?

Your paper needs to EXCEED 2 pages!! One and 7/8 pages will be considered short of the minimum.

Film Reflection
To be completely honest, before watching the video, I did not know much about the Appalachians and their culture. Music was a big part of the Appalachian peoples' daily lives. The music was heavily influenced by all the different settlers who had settled in the mountain. Cultures such as the Irish brought their fiddles, the Germans had brought their dulcimer, the Italians had presented their mandolins, the Spanish had brought their guitars, and even the African slaves brought their banjos. Since music played a significant role in the culture of the African/Americans, Appalachian music is a mixture of African and American music. One of the many things that I found to be interesting about the documentary is the part when the commentator said that all great music was a merging of African and American music. The comment added a whole new dimension to the documentary and helped me understand more about the background of most of our country’s music.
It is amazing to think that people have retained important features of such old, unusual music and induced them in the current ones. To the Appalachians, music was not only about fiddles and banjos, but instruments that shaped the notes for tunes of Christian Harmony, folks, jazz, blues, swing music, country music and other ballads. I have never thought that there was a time when white and black people were living under the same rugged conditions. Also, I found it arguably incredible that when technology was introduced and advanced, they assembled in peace and created their own radios. Furthermore, I related the information on lining out ...
