The Gateway to Freedom
After reading Eric Foner’s Gateway to Freedom, I have found that the article has been written about fugitive slaves. It describes the way they escaped and talks about the people who helped them on their way to Canada, New England, and New York.
The core similarity between Professor Foner’s article and Douglass’s experiences is that many people are living a difficult or miserable life under the slavery system. They are given tough times, and this leads them to determine how to escape to the North and be free from this idiotic life in the South. Professor Foner can be found saying the reason for slaves wanting to escape as soon as possible is human tragedies. Slaves are kept under constant pressure and are given harsh punishments. There is also a lack of food and water; they are beaten and forced to work overnight. Many of them look determined to escape individually or with the help of organized groups. The same idea has been presented by Douglass. In the early times when there was no transportation system, individual fugitives ran away and remained hidden in the woods in order to avoid being captured. By the 1850s, the transportation system got matured and this allowed various slaves to escape in the form of groups. For example, trains were used as the primary mode of transportation.
