Virtual Currency (VC) is a modern mode of private money that has its transactions on digital platforms. Bitcoin is an example of a virtual currency. Virtual currencies uses technologies that assists in keeping the transactions authentic and safe. Additionally, technology also assists in managing and controlling the creation of new currency units. They are usually transacted by the use of Blockchain technology which is fast, safe, and transparent. VC is different from paper or coin currencies because they have a common unit across all national borders globally. This new technology has been on the rise so that by April 2008, there were approximately 1,500 VCs in use all over the world. However, this growth has not been without challenges to the users. Such challenges include fraud, bubbles and outbursts, and bankruptcy of issuers or their middlemen. This paper investigates the history of Virtual Currencies and how their technology and use is significant in the age of web design.
Virtual currencies have evolved from time to time, with their development coming with more fame and use (He et al. 31). David Chaum was the first person who developed the idea of VCs in 1989. His idea was largely because there was increasing distrust in the use of the cash payment system due to the issue of double-spending (Sauer 117). He encrypted a unique signature on his digital cash, which was transacted through his company called DigiCash, and made it possible for the users to detect whether someone had already used the currency or not (Ciaian and Rajcaniova 887). It was after it that other companies such as CyberCash and FirstVirtual got developed five years later. DigiCash’s currency was called Ecash. Chaum implemented another system which he called Cyberbucks. Chaum made the systems in a way that they hid the activities of their clients so that even banks could not discern how much they spent, while the merchants were public so that they would be accountable to the banks.
When Chaum could not succeed in persuading banks and sellers to adopt his ideas, DigiCash failed and paved way for better VC which had their foundation on the mailing list created by Chaum (Ciaian and Rajcaniova 883).
