Book Summary and Reflection
In Pinkham’s version of “Discourse on Colonialism,” the book begins with an introduction by Robin D. G. Kelley. Kelley praises “Discourse on Colonialism” as one of the crucial anticolonial texts that were published postwar. In the text, Aime Cesaire describes the brutal impact of colonialism on both the colonizer and colonized. His claims are in response to the ideas that justified colonization at the time. The justifications ranged from evangelization to prevention of diseases and extension of the rule of law. Cesaire rejects such reasons because they do not align with the brutal repressions of the various insurrections that the colonizers encountered. Therefore, Cesaire asserts that supporting such views and methods is a disease that affects Europe, and it is evidence that every European Christian bourgeois has a “Hitler inside him” (36). Cesaire also acknowledges the racial nature of colonization by identifying that Hitler was hated in Europe because he employed the methods reserved for Arabs, Indians, and Black people on White people.
