These will be based on one primary source document of your choosing from Chapters 3-4 found in the documents reader, For the Record, that came as a companion to the textbook. (A primary source is something generated at or near the time of the event under examination.) The primary source document will be followed by Review Questions. Use those questions to guide your prose/essay response. Do not simply respond with bulleted or numbered answers. Again, the expectation for this assignment is college level analysis and writing. Make sure you have all the appropriate citations and a works cited. Include an accurate word count at the end of the essay that does NOT include footnotes or works cited. Atiwaneto established status in the negotiation by holding out a wampum belt to symbolize the Abenaki people’s conditions for peace. At the same time, he demanded that his words be written and delivered to the Massachusetts governor. Atiwaneto’s method of establishing status helped him gain the attention of the other parties involved. The tactic served to intimidate the other party into submitting to their conditions. Although the English were not likely to submit that easily, they would at least take Atiwaneto seriously. By establishing his status in the negotiation, Atiwaneto was able to gain much-needed leverage. When the English responded, they would have to take into consideration everything that Atiwaneto had demanded.
Atiwaneto’s people were angry because the colonists were encroaching on and slowly trying to take away the land of the Abenaki. The Abenaki people had watched as the English extended their colonies into America. It was clear to them that these people were driven purely by greed.
